October 2008 newsletter

1. Annual General Meeting

The AGM will take place at Southfield Golf Club on 22 October at 6.30pm. We need to elect a new committee and agree our aims for the next 12 months. We’d be delighted to have new faces on the committee or volunteers to lead on different issues. For the last two years we’ve had 40 residents at the AGM – please do come and have your say. By then we should know the outcome of the Warneford Meadow Town Green Application and have further details on the CPZ from the Council. We have invited our neighbourhood police officer PC Oliver Jacques to discuss our concerns about this year’s spate of burglaries.

Please download and print the PDF version of the newsletter, fill in the slip at the end to indicate your priorities for the coming year and return it to Laura (no. 60) by Friday 17 October.

2. Burglaries and neighbourhood action

Unfortunately there have been a number of burglaries this year in Hill Top Road. On at least two occasions a burglar has got into a house and out again with the alarm ringing. So if you hear one go off, do not assume that it is a false alarm. If an alarm goes off and you feel confident enough that something is amiss, ring the police on 999 and keep a look out in back gardens for the burglar making his exit. We understand at least two arrests have been made, although it isn’t yet clear whether this will mean an end to burglaries in our road.

Do take a look at your house and improve the security if possible. The Home Office offers a guide to home security on their website. Their main tips are:

At the DRARA AGM Inspector Brian Cooper requested a volunteer for the police neighbourhood action group (NAG). The group doesn’t meet frequently (although the meeting times are usually during the day). If you would be willing to represent our area on this group, please contact Karen Spiller (242723).

3. Recycling

Please continue to use the yellow bin outside no. 62 for recycling Tetra-pak™ cartons. If you want to join the emptying rota please contact Stephen Jones (421643).

Battery recycling: Marc Thomas and Leila Lake at no. 68 have put an empty plastic rubbish bin behind their green and blue wheelie bins at the side of their house for old batteries. Marc and Leila will take them to Redbridge.

4. Planning matters

We still await the Town Green ruling on Warneford Meadow. Any day now … The City Council are currently consulting residents on their proposed 20 MPH speed limit in all non arterial roads inside the ring road through their website.

They are also consulting on the core strategy (replacement to the Local Plan) – earlier feedback resulted in the removal of Southfield Golf Course from their list of sites for potential housing development on this website.

5. Southfield Golf Club membership

Southfield Golf Club is open to offering discounted membership (golf membership and/or social membership) to local residents provided that it results in a genuine increase in member numbers. The main advantages of social membership are 1) a discounted bar; 2) a well-priced restaurant offering lunches; 3) the possibility of hiring their facilities for private functions. If you’re interested, could you fill in the slip on the PDF version of the newsletter and add any comments.

6. Events and activities

Apple day

Apple day is on Sunday 5 October from noon onwards. There will be two apple presses, teas, book and bric a brac stalls, children's games and the Headington Morris dancers who will perform at the Hill Top Rd entrance of the Meadow at 1pm. Remember to bring empty bottles if you’d like to take some apple juice home with you.
